Every new website brings the same question: do you need a content management system, or is a brochure website enough? The decision affects the price, the deadline and how often you will call your developer. We will help you decide in a few minutes, without paying for features you will never use.

What a CMS is and what the difference is in practice

CMS (content management system) is the admin area of your website that you log into and change texts, photos, news or articles yourself. Much like writing a document in Word, except the result appears on the website right away.

Website without CMS (a brochure website) has no such admin area. The content is prepared and edited by whoever built the website. When you want to change something, you send an e-mail and the change is made for you.

Both options share the same base: custom design, fast loading, a mobile version and SEO essentials in the price. The only difference is who will change the content and how often.

When a website without CMS is enough

A brochure website is the right choice when:

  • the content changes a few times a year: services, prices and contact details are stable,
  • you have neither the time nor the wish to look after a website and you would rather send an e-mail,
  • you are not planning to write a blog nor regular news,
  • you need the website quickly and at a lower price.

These are typically tradespeople, medical practices, law firms, accountants or smaller companies with a stable offer. For them a content management system is often a needless complication: another password, another thing to keep updated.

Fewer moving parts has a practical advantage too: the website is simpler, fast and has fewer places where something can break.

When a website with CMS pays off

A content management system pays off when:

  • you add content regularly: news, promotions, testimonials, photos from completed jobs, job openings,
  • you want to write a blog: every good article is a new chance that someone finds you in Google or that an AI assistant mentions you,
  • more than one person looks after the website: for example marketing writes the articles and sales updates the price list,
  • prices or the offer change often: seasonal offers, a daily menu, course dates,
  • you are planning more language versions and you want to manage them yourself.

In cases like these, paying for every small change would eventually cost you more than the difference in price. And above all, you would be waiting for the changes.

Typical examples from practice

Type of businessRecommendationWhy
A car repair shop with a fixed price listWebsiteservices change rarely, what matters is the phone number and the map
A restaurant with a daily menuWebsite with CMSthe menu changes every day and the staff have to change it
A law firmWebsite, or Website with CMS if you plan to write articlesexpert articles build trust and rankings in Google
A photographer or a construction companyWebsite with CMSnew projects and galleries are the best advertising
A company with seasonal promotionsWebsite with CMSpromotions have to go live now, not in a week

Decision test: five questions

  1. Will you change the website content more often than once a month?
  2. Are you planning to write a blog or news, or to add testimonials?
  3. Do you have someone in the company who will have time for it?
  4. Will you need more language versions?
  5. Is it likely that the website will grow within a few years, for example with an online store?

Your result: If you answered “yes” to at least two questions, a website with CMS is probably worth it. If you answered “no” everywhere, save the money and choose a brochure website. You can invest the difference in good texts and photos.

Myths about content management systems

“A website with CMS is always slower”

It does not have to be. Speed does not depend on whether a website has an admin area, but on how it is built. The slow ones tend to be websites with heavy templates and dozens of plugins. A custom built website with CMS can be just as fast as a brochure one. We explain what exactly affects speed in the article Core Web Vitals in plain language.

“CMS means WordPress”

WordPress is the best known content management system, but not the only one. There are many others, including custom built systems. What matters is not the name, but whether you find your way around it, whether it is secure and who takes care of updates. Our content management system is in Slovak and contains only what you really need.

“I will break the design in a CMS”

A well set up content management system lets you change the content, not break the look. Headings, colors and layout stay the way they should be. You change the texts and photos.

“A CMS will save me all the work”

A CMS saves you money on changes, but it will not write the content for you. If you have nobody in the company who will write regularly, the content management system will just be an unused feature. Be honest with yourself.

How much time it takes to manage a website with CMS

Small changes (a new price, different opening hours, a photo from an event) are a matter of minutes. Writing takes longer: a good blog article can take several hours, because you have to think through the topic, write the text and pick the photos.

Before you decide, answer honestly who will prepare the content and how much time it will take them each week. If you want a blog but do not have the capacity for it, you can combine both: you make the everyday changes yourself and we help you with the expert articles as part of SEO Complete.

What if you decide later

It is not a decision for life. A brochure website can be extended later with a content management system, a blog or an online store. It is cheaper and faster when we know about it from the start. We then build the website so it is ready to grow.

That is why at the first consultation we ask not only what you need today, but also about your plans for the next two or three years. If you are thinking about selling online, read our comparison custom online store, or a ready-made platform.

In short

  • Website from 1,999 €: when the content changes rarely and you want some peace of mind.
  • Website with CMS from 2,999 €: when you want to add content regularly and write a blog.
  • In both cases you get a custom design, a fast website and SEO essentials in the price.
