Free website audit: how to read the results and what to do next
In a minute you have the result for mobile and desktop. We explain what the scores, the colors and the impact mean for every check and in what order to fix the errors.
Article contents
Our Free audit is an automated check of your website homepage on mobile and on a computer. You have the result within a minute. In this article we explain exactly what we check, how to read the scores and colors and what to do so the results turn into a clear plan, not just a list of red lines.
How to run the audit
- Open the page Free audit and enter your website address, for example
www.yourcompany.com. - The audit checks the homepage twice: the way a phone sees it and the way a computer (desktop) sees it.
- You will see the result within a minute. The report has its own address, so you can send it to a colleague or to your website manager.
You do not have to register or install anything. And yes, you can check a competitor's website the same way.
What exactly we check
The checks are split into six areas. For each one you will find what we measured, why it matters and how to fix it.
| Area | What we look at | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | how fast the server responds, the page size and the number of files that have to download | a slow website loses visitors before they even see it |
| SEO | the page title and description, headings, indexing permission, the canonical address (the main version of the page) | so Google finds you and shows you correctly in the results |
| SEO for AI | AI crawler access, structured data, content without JavaScript (we list the llms.txt file for information only; it does not count towards the score) | so ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity know about you |
| Mobile | the display settings for mobile and the same content as on a computer | many customers look you up on their phone first |
| Security | HTTPS (a secure connection) and the server security headers | visitor trust and protection against common attacks |
| Content | image descriptions, amount of text, links | content decides whether the page answers people's questions |
Why mobile and desktop results differ
We load the mobile version the way an iPhone receives it. We estimate the mobile loading time for a regular 4G connection, which is slower than the internet on a computer. Heavy photos, a lot of scripts or a slow server therefore show up more on mobile, and mobile usually comes out worse.
Mobile matters more. Google rates a website primarily from its mobile version. If your time is limited, start with the fixes that help mobile.
Results can differ slightly even when you measure the same website again. It depends on the current load on the server and on the network. If the score moves by a few points, that is no reason to panic. Watch the trend and the specific errors, not a single number.
How to read the score
At the top of the report you will see an overall score from 0 to 100, separately for mobile and for desktop. Below it are partial scores for speed, SEO, SEO for AI, security and content. The higher the number, the better. Roughly:
- 90 to 100: excellent. Fine tuning the details.
- 50 to 89: the website works, but loses out needlessly. It pays to fix the most important points.
- below 50: the website is probably costing you customers. Fixes should come as soon as possible.
The score is not a school grade. A website with a score of 70 can sell better than a website with a score of 100 if it has a better offer and better texts. The score shows where you are losing out needlessly, not how good your business is.
The colors used with individual checks
- Green: all good, nothing to do.
- Orange: a recommendation. It is not an error, but there is room for improvement.
- Red: an error that is hurting you. Fix these first.
- Gray: information that fills in the picture, with no rating.
Impact: high, medium, low
Not every error matters equally. A missing description on one image is not the same as blocking the whole website from indexing. That is why every check also shows its impact. The most important problems are summarized right at the top of the report, so you do not have to read the whole list.
What you find with every check
- What we measured: a specific value, for example the title length or the page size.
- Why it matters: an explanation in plain language, with no technical terms.
- How to fix it: a short procedure for your administrator or website manager.
What to do with the results: a plan in three steps
- Red items with high impact first. Typically blocked indexing, missing HTTPS or extremely slow loading. These things cost you customers every day.
- Then the quick wins. Titles, page descriptions and image descriptions are something your administrator can handle in the content management system in one afternoon.
- Technical items last. Send server speed, security headers or script changes to your website manager. Just send them the report link. They will find everything they need in it.
How to send the report to your website manager
If you do not manage the website yourself, send your website manager the report link with a short, specific request. For example:
Hello, I had our website checked and you will find the report at this link. Could you send me an estimate by Friday of how much time and money it would take to fix the red items with high impact? Thank you.
A request like this can be answered with a number and a date. That way you avoid a vague “I will look into it”.
After the fixes, run the audit again and compare the result. If you want to know which errors we see most often and how to fix them, read the article 10 mistakes we find most often in website audits. We explain abbreviations like LCP and CLS in the article Core Web Vitals in plain language.
When a free audit is not enough
The Free audit checks the homepage only. That page is usually the best prepared one, because everyone looks at it. Problems often hide deeper: in products, articles, the contact form or on old subpages that nobody remembers anymore.
On top of that, an automated audit cannot judge whether your texts are persuasive, whether your offer is clear and whether a customer can easily reach you. Only a person can do that.
That is the job of the Complete Audit for 350 €. It includes:
- a check of every subpage on mobile and on desktop (for large online stores, every page type and a sample of products),
- a fix guide for your administrator, step by step,
- a priority order: what to fix now and what can wait,
- speed and Core Web Vitals for every page type,
- an analysis of how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity see you,
- a comparison with three competitors and keywords,
- a PDF report and a 30-minute online consultation.
If you order a fix, a new website or SEO Complete from us within 2 weeks of receiving the audit, we deduct the price of the audit (up to the value of the order).

Monitoring instead of a one-time check
A website changes even when nobody is working on it. A plugin update breaks a form, the hosting changes its settings, the HTTPS certificate expires. A one-time audit shows the state today, but not in a month.
Website Guardian therefore runs an audit automatically every week, compares it with the previous one and when something breaks, it sends you an e-mail with no technical terms. It costs 29 € per month or 290 € per year, and the first 14 days are free.

FAQ
Questions on this topic
Is the Free audit really free?
Yes. You enter the website address and you see the result within a minute. You pay nothing and commit to nothing.
Why does another tool show me a different score?
Every tool measures a little differently: from a different location, with a different assumption about mobile connection speed and at a different time. Do not watch the exact number, watch the trend and the specific errors that keep coming back.
Can I also check a competitor's website?
Yes, the Free audit works for any public address. Comparing yourself with competitors is a good way to find out where you are ahead and where you are behind.
You will find more answers in the section FAQ.
