A custom online store, or a ready-made platform? A fair comparison
Every path has its place. We compare rented platforms, open-source solutions and a custom online store, including the cases where we would not recommend a custom online store to you.
Article contents
You want to sell online and you are deciding what to build the store on. There are three paths: a rented platform, an open-source solution or a custom online store. Each has its place and none is best for everyone. Here is a fair comparison, including when we will not recommend a custom online store to you.
The three paths in brief
- Rented platform (SaaS in technical terms, meaning software as a service). You "rent" the online store for a monthly fee. Everything runs at the provider, you only set the look and add products. Well-known ones include Shoptet, Shopify and Upgates.
- Open-source solution. The software is free and openly available, but you need hosting, installation, setup, plugins and someone to take care of updates. Typically WooCommerce (a plugin for WordPress) or PrestaShop.
- Custom online store. A developer builds the store exactly around your processes. It costs more at the start, but you do not have to adapt to the limits of a platform.
| Comparison | Rented platform | Open-source | Custom quote |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | the fastest and cheapest | moderately fast | the slowest, with us from 3,500 €+ |
| Recurring costs | a monthly fee, with some also charges on revenue and for plugins | hosting, paid plugins, updates | hosting and maintenance |
| Customization | within the limits of the platform | large, but the plugins can "clash" | full |
| Code and data | the code belongs to the platform, you can export the data as far as it allows | the code is free, the data is with you | both the code and the data are yours |
| Website speed | depends on the template and the plugins | often drops as plugins are added | tuned to your needs |
| Suitable for | starting out, testing the market, standard sales | mid-sized stores with technical support | growing companies with specific processes |
The exact prices and terms of the platforms change, so always check their current pricing. In this article we compare principles, not tariffs.
When a ready-made platform is the better choice
Let us be straight: if you sell a few dozen products and are still testing whether it will catch on, you do not need a custom online store. A ready-made platform is better when:
- you are starting out and you want to start selling as soon as possible with a minimal investment,
- your sales are standard: product, cart, payment, shipping, no special rules,
- you do not have the budget for a one-time investment and you prefer to pay monthly,
- you want to set everything up yourself through ready-made templates and plugins.
A well set up platform with smart content sells better than an expensive custom online store nobody comes to.
When a custom online store is worth it
A custom online store makes sense when ready-made solutions start to limit you:
- You have a specific process. A product configurator, made-to-order production, individual prices for wholesale customers, subscriptions, appointment booking.
- You need a connection to inventory, accounting or an information system that the platform does not support, or supports only through expensive and fragile plugins.
- The fees grow with your revenue. With higher sales, the monthly fees and percentages can exceed the one-time investment in your own solution.
- You care about speed and SEO with no compromises, because most customers come to you from Google.
- You want to own both the code and the data and not depend on the decisions of a single company.
- You need measurement of your own. An affiliate programme, for instance, where a referral has to be matched to a sale. How that can be done without a single cookie we describe in our article How to track referrals without cookies.
What to look at when comparing
Whichever path you choose, answer these questions before you decide.
How much will it cost over three years?
Do not compare only the price at the start. Add up the total cost over three years: the start + 36 monthly fees + paid plugins + any percentage of revenue + the changes you order from a developer. Only that sum shows the real difference.
Will the online store be fast and easy to find?
In an online store, product SEO decides: your own product descriptions (not copied from the manufacturer), structured data with the price and availability, clean category addresses and feeds (automatic product lists) for price comparison sites. Speed on mobile matters just as much (more in the article Core Web Vitals in plain language).
Can you get to your data?
Check that you can export products, customers and orders at any time in a common format. If you ever want to leave, without an export you start from zero.
Does it work in Slovak?
Payment gateways your customers use, carriers that deliver here, invoices that follow Slovak rules, e-mails and terms and conditions in Slovak. With foreign platforms, check this in advance.
Who will help you when something breaks?
On Friday evening the payment stops working. Who do you call? With a platform it is their support, with an open-source solution your administrator, with a custom online store its author. Agree on this before you need it.
Be careful when moving an online store. When moving from a platform to your own solution (or the other way round), the most important thing is to keep the product and category addresses, or to permanently redirect every old address (a 301 redirect) to the new one. Otherwise you lose the Google rankings you have built for years.
The most common mistakes when choosing an online store
- Deciding only by the price at the start. A cheap start with expensive running costs may not pay off after a year.
- Product descriptions copied from the manufacturer. Dozens of other stores have the same text and Google has no reason to prefer you.
- Too many plugins. Every extra plugin slows the website down and raises the risk that something breaks after an update.
- An online store tested only on a desktop. Try the buying process on a mobile, from finding the product all the way to paying.
- No content plan. Guides, comparisons and answers to common questions bring in customers who do not yet know exactly what they want to buy.
What to prepare before your enquiry
Whether you approach us or another supplier, you will get an exact quote faster when you know:
- the approximate number of products and whether they have variants (sizes, colors),
- which shipping and payment methods you want to offer,
- which systems the online store should work with (inventory, accounting, cash register),
- whether you plan to sell abroad as well and in which languages,
- when you want to start selling.
What our custom online store includes
An online store with us costs from 3,500 €+. The final price depends on the number of products and variants and on the connections to other systems. The price includes:
- everything from the Website with CMS package: custom design, a content management system, a blog and training,
- products, variants, inventory and orders,
- a payment gateway, cash on delivery and shipping,
- automatic e-mails and invoices,
- product SEO and feeds for price comparison sites,
- an overview of sales and orders,
- SEO essentials for Google and AI search engines.

A third option: start simple and grow
You do not have to decide once and for all. For many companies it makes sense to start on a ready-made platform, test the market and later, when the platform starts to hold them back, move to a custom solution. What matters is planning from the start so the data can be moved and the addresses kept.
